St James College in Brisbane is a co-educational Catholic Secondary School in the Edmund Rice Tradition. It is an inner city school, operating on a uniquely small block surrounded by office buildings. The school’s highly diverse community includes students from refugee families and students with special needs. St James started using LearningField this year and in this case study they describe how the service is supporting a range of learning styles as well as student needs and abilities.
The school’s Principal, Gerry Crooks, talks about how LearningField has opened “extraordinary new pathways for teachers in their teaching and learning processes in the classroom”. Leigh Brincat, Teaching Learning Support Officer, discusses how a teacher might be teaching the same concept but can then assign different textbooks to different students to ensure they receive the content that is most appropriate to their needs. Maths teacher Chris Zammit speaks of allocating specific resources to the more advanced students in a class to enable them to move forward, while providing the teacher with more time to assist other students. History teacher Tim Fergus adds that students discovering and sharing different resources is making their learning experience “more collaborative and better”.
Head of E-Learning, Nikki Carpenter, talks about the choice available in LearningField and thinks it is “amazing” that a Science teacher now has access to 15 Science textbooks for Year 7.
Both teachers and students talk about how easy LearningField is to use. History teacher Tim Fergus speaks of the familiarity of LearningField to students: for example they are added to ‘groups’ which reflects their behaviour on social media. The students describe how easy it is to access LearningField both online and offline, and how it can be used as a research tool. By allowing the students to use LearningField as a digital library the school knows they are accessing credible and current resources, in a safe and appropriate manner.
Nikki Carpenter also talks about how LearningField has supported student digital literacy. She discusses how LearningField is helping students become “really responsible digital citizens”.
Many thanks to the teachers and students at St James College who participated in this case study to share their school’s experience with LearningField.
